Centre du monde – Les Nantais le savaient intuitivement, la science l’a prouvé : Nantes est naturellement le centre du monde, ou plus précisément de l’hémisphère émergé ; la Nouvelle-Zélande, à son nadir, étant celui de l’hémisphère immergé. Ce sont deux géographes britanniques qui l’ont découvert en 1968 et publié dans leur ouvrage Physical and Human Geography (McDonald & Evans Ltd). « Two hemispheres of special significance to the geographer are the so-called land hemisphere and water hemisphere. If you hold up a globe and turn and twist is round so that you get the maximum possible amount of land surface upon one face you have the land hemisphere. Nantes, at the mouth of the Loire in France, has been calculated to lie at the very centre oh this land hemisphere ; western Europe lies at the heart of most of the world’s land area. Conversely, the water hemisphere is that half of the earth’s surface containing the maximum water area. New Zealand lies at the centre of the water hemisphere, so it is one of the most remote and isolated of lands. »
Autrement dit, « Le géographe attache une importance particulière à deux sous-ensembles, l’hémisphère émergé et l’hémisphère immergé. Lorsque vous faites tourner un globe terrestre sur lui-même, jusqu’à avoir sous les yeux le maximum possible de surface hors d’eau, vous obtenez l’hémisphère émergé. Nantes, à l’embouchure de la Loire, en France, se trouve très exactement placée au centre de cet hémisphère (…) »
Il était temps que l’évidence soit inscrite dans le marbre, fût-il anglais, et que soit rendu aux Nantais la place qui leur revient.
