En 2012, l'EII commence à s'étendre en Syrie et le , il devient l'État islamique en Irak et au Levant (EIIL) (en arabe الدولة الاسلامية في العراق والشام, ad-dawla al-islāmiyya fi-l-ʿirāq wa-š-šām, littéralement « État islamique en Irak et dans le Cham »), en anglaisISIS, parfois désigné par l'acronyme arabe Daech (en arabe داعش,Dāʿiš [ˈdaːʕiʃ ], en anglais Daesh) utilisé par ses opposants.
Le , l'EIIL annonce le rétablissement du califat sous le nom État islamique dans les territoires sous son contrôle et Abou Bakr al-Baghdadi se proclame calife, successeur de Mahomet, sous le nom d'Ibrahim. Il entre alors en conflit avec Al-Qaïda et son influence s'étend à l'ensemble du monde musulman avec l'allégeance de plusieurs groupes djihadistes, les plus importants étant Boko Haram dans le Nord-Est du Nigeria, Ansar Bait al-Maqdis dans leSinaï égyptien, le Majilis Choura Chabab al-Islam en Libye, Jund al-Khalifa en Algérie et Ansar Dawlat al-islammiyya au Yémen."

What should we call it?
USA TODAY identifies the group as the Islamic State, the Islamic State militant group, or the Islamic State extremist group. The acronym is not used except in quotes.
