I should have mentioned to you that all state-run music schools in France offer students and parents hefty discounts on lessons. Most teachers (professeurs) are salaried - pay can be up to 3,000 euros a month for a 'professeur' with a Certificate of Aptitude (CA) and on the top échelon. Some students can pay as little as 60 euros A YEAR for an instrumental lesson WITH compulsory sol-fège (the French equivilent of aural tests but with the emphasis on dictation - rhythmic and melodic. And if the students actually live in the town it's even cheaper! It comes off the local taxes. In France, money goes round - it circulates - like the health system.
The CNR in Limoges has around 1,800 students (including dance), the ENM in Brive some 1,400 students.
